VCD - RUDY SARZO - Bass Guitar Master Class

Rudy Sarzo, bass guitar player, was born in Cuba in 1950 and subsequently left that country in 1961. Sarzo is a gifted musician who has played with many bands including Quiet Riot, Ozzy Osbourne, Whitesnake, Manic Eden, Ronnie James Dio, Blue Öyster Cult, etc. His recordings with these artists combined have sold over 30 million copies worldwide.

As a member of Ozzy Osbourne’s band, from March 1981 to September 1982, Rudy toured the world in support of the “Blizzard of Ozz” and “Diary Of a Madman” records, where he played on the Speak of the Devil and Tribute live albums, both of which have gone platinum. Sarzo has been quoted as saying he was very pleased to be able to say that he has played with Ozzy Osbourne before his own success as he was a big fan of Black Sabbath.

As a member of Quiet Riot, from September 1982 to January 1985, Rudy recorded the multi-platinum albums “Metal Health”, the first Heavy Metal debut to reach #1 on the Billboard charts. During this period Rudy headlined worldwide tours, appeared on numerous MTV videos and was voted #1 bassist in Circus Magazine for 1983. In the 1983 U.S. Festival, Quiet Riot performed two songs from their "Metal Health" album.

As a member of Whitesnake, from April 1987 to September 1994. During this period Rudy performed worldwide on headline tours in support of the multiplatinum “1987” and recored the “Slip of the Tongue” album and appeared on 6 MTV videos.

In February of 2004, Rudy joined Yngwie Malmsteen’s Rising Force for the U.S. 30 city “Attack Tour”. He then joined Dio later in 2004 and has been there ever since. In 2006, Rudy wrote a book named "Off The Rails" which tells the story of his time in the Ozzy Osbourne Band. The book centers mainly on his memories of Randy Rhoads, a guitarist and dear friend to him who died in a plane crash while on the Diary of a Madman tour.

Sarzo is also an avid computer digital animator, and when not touring or recording with Dio, he is a 3D technical director and co-executive producer at Ocean Visual FX in Southern California. Rudy demonstrated Acid, Vegas and DVD Architect software at the Sony Pictures booth during the 2004 Winter NAMM Show, released the “Acid for Non Linear Editors” training DVD directed by Douglas Spotted Eagle for the VASST training series and created the “Working Man’s bass” loop library exclusively for Sony Pictures’ Acid Software. He recently created the concert 3D animated open for the video wall during the last Dio european tour.

Rudy recently guest starred on the DeMarco Bros. Single, "Blood Moon", along with vocalist Dave Brooks. He is currently playing with Blue Öyster Cult, appearing with BÖC during its 2007 summer tour.

Warming up, equipment, rhythmic patterns, special scales, harmonics, octaves, slapping and popping, right- hand flamenco tremolo, soloing, and locking in with a drummer are all covered here by Sarzo formerly of Quiet Riot. He shows us that there is a lot more to heavy metal musicians than a lot of people might think.
